From the First Gather to the Final Flash

A look into our glass pumpkin creations

All pumpkins begin with a gather of molten hot glass from the furnace, and are shaped, designed, and blown into one of our iconic pumpkin styles.

Molten glass is gathered on a blow pipe

The Classic Harvest collection is one of the first successful designs formulated by Leonoff Art Glass. It begins with a clear glass gather and dipped into a fine orange frit to alter the color into a transparent orange. The bubble is then rolled in a medley of course, colorful glass that gives this pumpkin design it’s warm fall color palette. The glass is worked into the right shape for pressing into the optical form- a mould which creates ridges along the outer surface. As these ridges cool, they keep shape as the bubble is blown into it’s final expansion.

Surreal Collections such as the Fantasy Surreal and the Harvest Surreal are abstract art glass pumpkins with a loose impressionistic feel in warm fall harvest or vibrant colorful spring palettes. They begin as crystal clear, transparent glass gathers and are finely decorated with a whole range of granulated glass powders, shards and contrasting glass stringer threads. Striking a visual balance between the clear and decorative elements, the Surreal designs are pressed into an optical form and blown to full expansion.

The Spooky Collection is the latest design developed by Leonoff Art Glass featuring a distinguished modern look for your fall decor. Designs are applied using a molten concentrated glass color bar. Trails of liquid black glass are artfully applied to either a clear or transparent orange gather. Dot designs are flashed in heat: the applied color begins to pool together before being worked into the right shape for pressing into the optical form and blown into expansion. Wrap designs are expanded before applying the liquid glass to the surface.

Our unique Sea-foam design by Leonoff Art Glass features a cool ocean theme of aqua blues, white, and umber brown in a swirling abstraction. It begins with a clear glass gather and dipped into a fine blue glass powder to alter the color. The bubble is then rolled in a medley of course, colorful glass that gives this pumpkin design it’s signature coastal palette reminiscent of tumbling waves. After pressing the molten glass into an optical form, the piece is rolled on the marver in order to cool before blowing into final expansion.

The Crackle collections by Leonoff Art Glass include the Harvest Crackle, Earth tone Crackle, Halloween Crackle, Fantasy Crackle, and Crackle Squash varieties that are a highly popular design giving the pumpkin or squash form a realistic look and feel. Each piece begins with clear glass but is coated with granulated colors of glass to build contrasting layers. The piece is quickly quenched in water forming a skin, and as the glass is blown out the skin separates to create organic veins that reveal the interior layers of colors. This is an old world technique borrowed from Venetian glassblowing still used today.
